Woman Says Boyfriend Dumped Dirty Cat Litter on Her After Argument

In a now-viral post, a woman said her live-in boyfriend dumped dirty cat litter on her Monday night while she was lying on the couch.

Posting in Reddit's "True Off My Chest" forum under the username u/Catliterthrowaway, the woman said her boyfriend stormed out after the incident and hasn't been back to the apartment since. The post has garnered over 20,000 upvotes and thousands of comments urging the woman to kick her "piece of s**t" boyfriend to the curb—literally.

In her post, the woman said her boyfriend adopted a cat named Milkshake last year. Though he promised her he'd be Milkshake's primary caretaker, the woman regularly finds herself grooming the cat and cleaning his litter box.

"[M]y boyfriend quickly realized he really hates cleaning the litter box and would leave it (if I don't notice) for days at a time. I usually find myself being the one who cleans the box, which I don't mind because I'd pretty much do anything for this cat haha," she wrote.

Still, she was annoyed to come home to a dirty litter box on Monday night after being gone on a week-long trip.

"Immediately when I got through the door I could smell the box. It was terrible. I put my things down and greeted my boyfriend. After a few minutes, I asked him why [he] hasn't cleaned the box while I was gone and if he doesn't smell it. He said he just didn't feel like it and the cat didn't mind it," she wrote.

But according to veterinarian Dr. Stephanie Janeczko cats actually do mind if their boxes are dirty.

Writing for Petfinder, Janeczko said: "Unscooped, dirty litter boxes are the cat equivalent of that public bathroom with toilet paper all over the floor and unflushed toilets—you wouldn't want to use that either."

To keep cats healthy and happy, the Humane Society of the United States said cat owners should "scoop feces out of the litter box daily" and regularly change the litter.

"Twice a week is a general guideline for replacing clay litter, but depending on your circumstances, you may need to replace it every other day or only once a week," the Humane Society explained. "If you clean the litter box daily, you might only need to change clumping litter every two to three weeks. If you notice an odor or if much of the litter is wet or clumped, it's time for a change."

If a cat's litter box isn't cleaned properly, it may go to the bathroom outside the box.

With all this in mind, u/Catliterthrowaway told her boyfriend he needed to clean Milkshake's litter box "as soon as possible." So, he sauntered off to the cat's room and she made herself comfortable on the couch.

"I was laying on the couch for about 10 minutes and the next thing I felt was just litter (and other things) all over my chest and legs. I screamed, 'What the f**k is wrong with you?' And [my boyfriend] just shrugged and left the apartment," she wrote, adding that he hasn't been back since.

"I'm considering just changing the locks and throwing all his s**t out in the hallway since he isn't on the lease," she concluded. "This was something I just can't forgive so easily."

Redditors agreed that the action was unforgivable and encouraged u/Catliterthrowaway to follow through with her plans to kick her boyfriend out.

"Wow what a piece of s**t...yeah, throw his s**t out and break it off, you shouldn't be treated like that at all," u/geno23 said.

"Ditch the guy. Keep the cat," u/Additional-Future-16 wrote.

Redditor u/Educational-Glass-63 added: "There is no viable excuse for what he did. What a sad excuse of a man. Change the locks, pack his belongings, minus the cat of course, and be done with him. Don't let him near you ever again. He is scum."

Newsweek reached out to u/Catliterthrowaway for comment.

Redditor u/Catliterthrowaway isn't the first poster who's been told to dump her boyfriend.

In August, a woman was told to leave her boyfriend of 10 years after discovering he'd been secretly communicating with his ex throughout more than half of their relationship.

In July, a woman was told to dump her boyfriend after he refused to pay for her dinner.

And in May, commenters applauded a woman who dumped her boyfriend because "he can't cook."
