A cat has gone viral for playing a "practical joke" on her dog sibling, leaving a frog in his water bowl and patiently waiting for him to find out.

In a post shared on Reddit, the pets' owner, who goes by the username Loustalet5, showed a picture of the cat looking all proud after putting a living frog in her dog sibling bowl, guarding her work to make sure nobody took it out.

The pets' owner later explained that they did take the frog away from the dog's water and put it back in the pond where the cat originally got it from.

According to statistics by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.2 million are cats.

Each year about 4.1 million shelter animals are adopted, including 2 million dogs and 2.1 million cats. About 810,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Of those, 710,000 are dogs and 100,000 are cats.

The post, which was first shared on Tuesday on the r/cats subreddit, has gone viral and so far reached over 19,600 upvotes and 365 comments.

Most users thought the cat knew exactly what she was doing. One user, cindyyourasslooksfat commented: "Such a cat move." And ArtemisArt added: "Absolute power move."

Another user, onandonandonandoff, shared their own experience with evil cats: "When I went on vacation earlier this year, the person checking on my cats texted me one day that they had one of my dirty socks in their water bowl. They wanted their water to smell like my stinky feet, I guess. Love those little weirdos."

PoppyMMartin joked: "Look at the cat. 'Yes, it's perfect. All I do now is wait. Good things come to those who wait. That dog won't see what's coming. It is... Still in here, isn't it? Okay, good, good, good. Here he comes'." And wiz-R-Y said: "Hmmm frog. Okay I am hungry. Yum yum good taste. Woof! NO YOU SHOULD BE SCARED YOU LITTLE DUMB"

Different-Truth7668 saw it a different way: "How considerate to care for the frog's hydration. Cats are caregivers." And Cat_world_domination said: "Humans don't appreciate my presents, maybe the dog will."

Another user, Sokrydes joked: "Attempt #67: I've put a cadaver in the dog's drinking water in hopes to poison him. He is clearly stupid enough to drink the still water so this might work. EDIT: The attempt was thwarted by the stupid humans. Now I'm convinced they are in cahoots with the dog and I need to come up with a new plan to get rid of them all."

Shoddy_Lifeguard_852 commented: "That is hilarious! It's like your cat is playing a practical joke on the dog!" And artemisfowl9900 added: "Look at the cat's face - definitely not sorry. Just waiting for the dog to come along and slurp some of that frog water."

Lmcbmc wrote: "Hahaha, my husband hates snakes. We had a cat who waited until he was lying under a pickup truck then put a live garter snake on his chest. He about beat himself to death getting out from under there, and he insists he could hear her snickering." And DarthKrayt98 added: "I think the cat is attempting to cast a spell on the dog."
