Receipts from December 2021, the month prior to getting caught abusing the taxpayers, show Eldon Cusey purchased the following:

There is absolutely no way he could not know what he was doing.

According to the May 10, 2022, meeting minutes, Eldon Cusey, the former Wapella Township Road Commissioner was given an ultimatum by the Township Board, which was recommended by the township attorney after an audit of his use of the township’s credit card.

The sweet-heart deal? Pay back the $27,253.00 and resign from office or face prosecution. He did as asked; made the restitution and resigned from office.

We believe he should still face prosecution as any alleged deal made by the township should not waive prosecution for outright theft. It is a slap in the face to the taxpayers of Wapella Township and we urge township residents to forward this information to the DeWitt County Sheriff for investigation and referral for prosecution. Eldon Cusey’s ability to hold any public office should be forever prohibited.

The township board owes the public more than a restitution and resignation, they owe them referral for prosecution – Cusey violated the sacred trust placed in elected officials by the electorate.

I think someone should get a copy of that resignation letter to see if it has language guaranteeing him not to be prosecuted.

Why is it corrupt public officials just get to walk away?!?! That is why we have the problems we do. Shame on other elected officials and states attorneys who have an ethical duty to do what is write and prosecute. It is the only way Illinois changes!

If the Township received any federal highway funds, this could also be a federal crime, with federal time.

Given Wapella Township / DeWitt County are so small, shouldn’t this be handed off to the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor?

The path to eliminate Illinois township corruption and waste? Abolish them, most states do NOT have townships as well as 17 of Illinois counties. I’m a former McHenry Township trustee, trust me, we do NOT need them.

As an immigrant to Illinois. still amazed after decades how Illinois requires special units of government when other states can perform the same function within a city / county government. Bob Anderson, how often did the press show up at your public meetings?
