A cat that has "potty trained himself" has left the internet in stitches after gaining viral attention.

Shared on Reddit on Tuesday by user tunalemon, the picture shows a cat sitting on the toilet in the bathroom looking back at the camera. Alongside the caption: "Finding out that my cat potty trained himself," the picture has since gained more than 13,000 upvotes.

Amazed by the story, Reddit users headed to the comments to share their thoughts.

"Cats are the best," said one commenter, while another said: "Omg. What a jackpot of a cat."

"He thinks he's people," joked another Redditor.

One cat owner wrote: "Lucky. Mine just randomly s**** in the house plants."

But not everyone was convinced. "Come on now," wrote another commenter. "Trained himself to do this randomly on his own? Absolutely not. Can you train a cat to do this? Sure. But a cat is not going to do this on its own without being trained to do so."

But the Reddit poster clarified, insisting the feline has never been trained. "He's actually an outside cat. I'm 100 percent convinced he learned from watching me since he loves occupying me while I use the bathroom," they wrote. "For the record, I have absolutely no extra time to toilet train a cat."

Newsweek has reached out to tunalemon for comment.

If you wish your cat would also use the bathroom, there is some good news.

It is possible to teach your cat to use the toilet. In fact, many pet owners prefer to train their cat to use the bathroom and avoid any scooping for good.

Not the perfect fit for every cat, fearful kitties or those who already have difficulty using the litter box may not be suitable for toilet training, but if your cat is happy with their usual litter box, it could be worth a try.

When it comes to training your cat to use the bathroom, there are a few tools designed to help. One of these was created in 2004 by Jo Lapidge when she was inspired by the comedy movie Meet The Parents featuring the well-trained Mr. Jinx who uses the bathroom, Lapidge began training her cat Doogie to use the bathroom.

After several months, the Litter Kwitter was born. Now sold around the world, it includes four color-coded trays that fit over the rim of the toilet to aid training. The first tray is a litter tray that sits over the toilet seat completely. When your feline friend is used to using the new little box on the toilet, owners can move on to the next stage.

As time goes on, trays are swapped out with gaps in the center that gradually get larger until your cat no longer needs the litter-edge tray and will simply use the toilet by themselves.

Unfortunately, not all Redditors could share the same success stories. "My dumba** cat drinks out of the toilet," said one commenter.

Another commenter wrote: "I would be shouting this accomplishment from the rooftops."
